Inside the body is a sealed steel roller chain running between two square-drive sprockets. That's the whole trick, and it's why the turning happens somewhere other than where your hand is.

  1. The bottom sprocket sits on the bolt — down in the hole, where there's no room to swing anything.
  2. The top sprocket sits out where there's room — clear of the manifold, the frame rail, whatever's in the way. Put your own ratchet or breaker bar on it.
  3. The chain links the two — so a full sweep out in the open becomes a full turn on the bolt down in the hole. One to one. No clicking.
